Our Learning Method

Our Learning Method is simple. We are not linguistic specialists, but we’ve developed a simple way to learn that works.  It seems that regardless of learning methods, a majority of learning a language is based on memorization.

David’s Story:  I wanted to learn my wife’s language, Lao.  So I first bought a English/Lao dictionary and started randomly learning words.  I didn’t feel this was helping me learn the language. So then, I started looking on the internet to find… actually, very little for learning Lao.  So, I remembered reading some where that if I could learn about 1000 words, I could be ‘conversationally fluent’ in a language.  With this notion, I started searching the internet for ‘top 1000 words to be fluent in a language’.  This narrowed down the number of words I would have to learn, but still didn’t help me learn how to be conversational.  I decided that learning Common Phrases would help my ability to have a conversation.  With this idea, I started making a list of common phrases that people use in popular conversation, and organized them into groups.  Then, my wife Toly translated these phrases into Lao, first verbally, then in Lao script. I studied phonetic transliterations in English/Lao dictionary I had, and also in the limited Lao language websites online.  I learned that there were many ‘versions’ of transliteration.  Even from the same source, there was variation. At first this was frustrating.  But then I decided it was good reason to transliterate ‘my own way’, and try to keep it simple.

The Morning to Evening section is the first collection of popular phrases I compiled and started learning. This series was designed to have each phrase on a single row. The English audio, the English text, Transliteration of Lao, Lao text, and Lao audio. Click the button on the left or right to play the audio.  I designed the top of this section to start with phrases you might say in the morning, and progress down the page through afternoon phrases, and towards the end with evening phrases.

Next, I decided to create the Food and Restaurant section, because you have to eat! 🙂   Followed by the Numbers and Colors section, and People, Greetings & Seasons section.

Later, I created the Audio Language Learning .mp3 audio downloads section, because I wanted to listen to the audios on my drive to work.  With the .mp3 audios, you can listen & learn where ever you go… at home, in your car, in a plane, on a boat 🙂
